For Alex Meidam (1954) painting is a mode of expression which, more than other artistic media,
reflects the intrinsic materials of its creation. It is his belief that considered reflection is a
characteristic element of the painting medium. Through the size and the layering of his
paintings, Alex strives to let the materials reflect their own qualities. In this way the relationship
between elements of image is brought to the fore, alongside the material itself. Through this
process of collection and integration, Alex Meidam's work becomes a 'collection collée'. The
results are transformed images in which the medium enlightens both materially and mentally.
Only through the process of this double reflection can the confrontation with the medium be
perceived and is the true conclusion of the motive possible. This visual experience leads to an
ecstacy of consciousness.
